Xbox One to be Region-Locked
"Similar to the movie and music industry, games must meet country-specific regulatory guidelines before they are cleared for sale," a Microsoft spokesperson said. The newly, just-announced Xbox One is once again causing a stir. The console will not be able to play games outside of its mandated region. Oddly enough, Nintendo invented region-locking. The main regions are Asian and japan; North America; Europe, New Zealand, Australia; and China. Probable cause? The pricing structure.
Unlike the Xbox 360, Sony's PlayStation 3 console is region-free. Media such as DVD's, music, and games are programmed to be region-locked to prevent cross-consumation. Sony has yet to ring the alarm on whether or not the PlayStation 4 will be region-free. Microsoft further added: "Regarding region blocking, Microsoft don't have anything further to announce at this stage. We'll have more to share later." A list of region-free 360 games can be found -- > here: [http://gaming.wikia.com/wiki/Region_Free_Xbox_360_Games]
